The Jamaica-Brazil Chamber of Commerce was launched at the Espacio Uruguay, Avenida Paulista, São Paulo, Brazil, recently, under the auspices of the Jamaican Embassy Brasilia and president Donovan McFarlane.
The event saw the participation of the Jamaican ambassador to Brazil, Alison Stone Roofe and embassy staff there, along with members of the business community of São Paulo. Although conceptualised since 2008, the Jamaica-Brazil Chamber of Commerce, which will comprise a mix of Jamaican and Brazilian professionals, was officially launched, having received the Government of Jamaica's endorsement in September this year.
The endorsement was a prerequisite for recognition by the government of Brazil to commence operations in that country, according to Jamaica's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade. It said the launch of the Chamber is a significant achievement for the establishment of the Jamaican brand in Brazil. São Paulo is the business capital of Brazil and is responsible for generating more than 30 per cent of that country's GDP.
